A Moses basket, named for the biblical Moses who was left in a wicker cradle, is a portable bassinet for newborns and babies up to a few months old. They are ideal, if not the best, baby bassinets available today, partly because they are so lightweight compared to other portable bassinets, and you do not have to disturb your infant's sleep when moving him from one location to the next. These bassinets provide babies with comfort and the security they felt in the womb.
Ideally, these types of bassinets should be available with a frame stand that can be rolled around from one room to the next. Ensure the frame is sturdy and if it folds out, ensure it has a locking mechanism. You may even find one that will help rock your baby to sleep. The stand makes caring for your child so much easier on your back after a long pregnancy, labor and delivery. You will find it is sturdy, but these baby baskets should only be used until the child is strong enough to roll. They are not made for older infants.
Look for baby baskets that have a strong weave and a sturdy bottom, as well as a mattress that fits tightly.
There are many types available. You could choose one with a hood and make an extra purchase of netting for use when you take your newborn baby out for a little fresh air. Most bassinets come with washable fabric linings and mattress padding, but many moms prefer to sew their own inserts and mattress pad covers with fabrics that match the baby's room. It is quite simple when using the original fabrics as template patterns. Suitable linings and mattress covers can also be purchased online as most bassinets are standardized in size.
These bassinets are inexpensive, usually less than $200 for a good quality one, so it will not dig into your baby budget too deeply. Baskets can be found in brick and mortar baby shops, but they can also be ordered online. Check company reviews and do a little comparisons. Be sure to consider shipping costs in the grand total, however. Baby bassinets will be large shipments.
Moses baskets have been used since ancient times because they ensure babies are comfortable and they are convenient for mom and dad. Look for a good quality basket and both you and your baby will rest easy.
I like the Pop-up storage boxes & the Moses baskets. I used a basket with a hood on it when my boys were babies.
